The red Gamay grapes of the Beaujolais region create a unique wine exclusive unto itself. An easy-drinking red wine when slightly chilled, Beaujolais are full of vibrant fruit with no perceivable tannins, thanks to a granite soil and whole berry fermentation. It wasn’t until the 1960s that Beaujolais moved from cask and café pitchers, to glass bottles and worldwide consumption. This region of small high quality and distinct wine villages set on the edge of Burgundy, offers reasonably priced, soft fruity reds, with hints of cherry, chocolate and some say, banana. Some of the best of Beaujolais come from the “Cru” villages, such as Morgon, and Fleurie. Premier producers from Domaines Calot, Chignard, Piron and Ruet, offer exceptional vintages of Morgan, Beaujolais Villages, Fleurie and Côte de Brouilly.
